Furniture made with concrete encourages an approachable relationship to the industrial materials found in urban centres; goods that have an immediate purpose and with which we form intimate relationships facilitate dialogue with the city around us.
Concrete is integral to the construction of cities; it is the structural material of choice for columns, walls, and floors in buildings. Concrete is formed, poured, and troweled into place. The surface is covered, hidden, and ignored. We lose touch with a material when we forget about the hands that have touched it.
Concrete is an imperfect material, just like how we are imperfect. We have blemishes and marks from our experiences and abilities. Celebrate them. Shine a light on them. Reflect on our uniqueness. Let our imperfect surfaces glow. Admire the material surface made for you.
Centred or rotated, the weight of the concrete works well as a bookend.
Included with the order are the shade, cord, and light bulb. The light requires assembly before use. The bulbs are commonly found in most big box stores (half mirror bulbs), often found in the specialty section or online. Alternatively, you can use any standard 60w light bulb (LED recommended). The bulb provided could last for 27 years (based on 3 hours of use/day).
